On This Day in History- September 20, 1973: Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in a battle of the sexes tennis match. The Battle of the Sexes is a title given to three notable tennis matches organized by tennis star Bobby Riggs between a male and a female. These matches came about in 1973 when Bobby Riggs, a past tennis star, came out of retirement at the age of 55 and claimed he could beat any top female player at the time. A master promoter, Riggs saw this as a perfect opportunity to not only promote tennis but to promote himself as well. The second of these matches was a nationally televised match between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King.
